  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have his detractors, but Peter Schmeichel isn’t one of them.

Solskjaer is struggling to turn around the ship at Manchester United, having succumbed to a miserable eight defeats in 17 games since his permanent appointment back in March.

United hit a fresh nadir with a listless 2-0 defeat against West Ham on Sunday, with Marcus Rashford limping off to further weaken an already injury-hit squad.

However, fellow 1999 legend Schmeichel has urged United to stay the course with Solskjaer, who he says has only just started the huge clear-up job required at the club.

“No, I think there are so many things that needs to be done,” said Schemichel. “So, Ole needs to still let some players leave the club and he needs to bring players in.

“OK, we didn’t replace Lukaku which was obviously a bit of a shame because we don’t really have a striker. But, I think he’s done well so far.

“(Some) players have left, players who didn’t want to be there, and then he’s brought in young, very hungry talent (like) Daniel James, (Aaron) Wan-Bissaka for instance. And I think I am actually quite OK. I think we are doing quite OK. ”
