STATS: India's long home Test season in numbers

The long home season for the Indian cricket team has come to an end after they completed a 2-1 series win over Australia in Dharamsala on Tuesday.

During the season, India played a total of 13 Tests – winning 10 of them, drawing two and losing just once. India also went top of the ICC Test Rankings during the period and have managed to build a healthy lead by the end of the campaign.

BATTING

The top performers for India with the bat were Cheteshwar Pujara and captain Virat Kohli, with both batsmen notching up four hundreds apiece.

Pujara hit 1,316 runs over the course of the 13 matches, which is an Indian record for the most runs in a Test season.

On the other hand, Kohli finished with 1,252 runs from 12 Tests and hit three double centuries. The Delhi batsman, though, had a poor outing against Australia after being the Player of the Series against England.

The biggest individual knock of the season came from the bat of Karun Nair. Playing in just his third Test, Nair became only the second Indian batsman to slam a triple century in Test cricket when he scored an unbeaten 303 against England at Chennai in December 2016.

When it came to partnerships, what stood out was the 365-run stand between Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane against New Zealand in Indore. Kohli scored 211, while Rahane managed 188 in that innings.

BOWLING

The stand-out bowlers for the Indian team were definitely the spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. The two caused havoc, with visiting batsmen finding life hard against them.

Ashwin picked up 82 wickets, which is now a record for the most number of Test scalps taken in a single season. Jadeja took 71 wickets and ended the season as the number one Test bowler in the world.

Jadeja also produced the best bowling performance in an innings, with his spell of 7-48 against England in Chennai, which helped India register an innings victory on what looked like a batting-friendly wicket.

Ashwin’s 13 wickets against New Zealand in Indore was the most scalps taken in a single match during the season.

FIELDING

Wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha took the most number of catches [25] and also made one stumping, which means that he contributed to 26 dismissals in total.

Rahane was the most impressive Indian fielder, with 14 catches to his name.
