The UAE Rugby Federation have moved to Phase 2 of their return-to-play protocols.
The move to Phase 2, announced on Sunday, means that some of the restrictions around rugby have been lifted, including an increase in numbers at training sessions. It also permits mini and youth rugby to resume without the restrictions on numbers.
As the governing body for Touch Rugby, the UAERF has permitted sanctioned Touch leagues and tournaments to restart after a six-month absence.
Touch offers a good alternative for players, coaches and referees who are keen to ramp up their fitness and hone their skills ahead of the return of contact rugby in Phase 4 of the return-to-play protocols.
The Touch League offers men’s, mixed and ladies grades and caters to both social teams as well as a competitive division.
The organisers have welcomed the decision by the UAERF, stating: “We have been working with the UAERF to get the approvals that we need to start the league and we are absolutely delighted to be able to get things moving and get people back out playing.”
It may be a while before the Gulf rugby union heavyweights battle it out on the pitch but until then, for those needing a rugby fix, maybe Touch is the way forward.
