The UAE temperature has risen significantly over the past week or two, banishing memories of the rain we had in February and March.
With recent restrictions lifted amid the Covid-19 pandemic, people are delighted to be able to walk outdoors again. The warm air a welcome relief from the claustrophobic realms of being stuck at home.
Summer is a period many UAE residents dread as the hot weather reaches its climax. However, it’s also the time of year when people can take advantage of some quality membership offers at their local golf club.
People can enjoy top class facilities for just a fraction of a full membership cost, an ideal way to spend summer mornings and evenings, given local football, rugby and GAA seasons have come to a conclusion.
Whether it’s a full 18 holes, nine holes, or a trip to the driving range, all requirements and standards of play are accommodated across the city’s top courses.
Across the Emirates, golf has become more accessible than ever before and that can only be a good thing. But what is it that makes the sport so popular during the summer months?
With no outdoor sport taking place until late August, it is the perfect remedy to fill a gap of time each morning or evening, escaping the house and having a focus outside of work.
The social aspect is brilliant, both from a playing and non-playing perspective. With many families returning to their respective home nations once the school year finishes, it’s a great opportunity for those who remain in the country to meet new people and keep fit.
And that’s not to forget the beauty of the courses in UAE, on par with the best in the world.
Among residents of the Marina, Jumeirah Lakes Towers and further afield, the Address Montgomerie has emerged as one of the most popular clubs to join during the summer months.
Access to the championship course, the practice facilities, Footgolf and Academy par 3 course are among the highlights included in the membership fee.
This year’s rate is yet to be announced, however the 2019 price was AED 5,500 per person.
Five minutes down the road at Emirates Golf Club, home to the Dubai Desert Classic, a summer four-month membership costs AED 5,995 – reduced from AED 6,400 in 2019.
Included in the membership is unlimited access to the Faldo course seven days a week from 9am, plus access to Dubai Creek Championship Course and the Fire course at Jumeirah Golf Estates from 9am-2pm on Sunday-Thursday.
At Jumeirah Golf Estates, the membership has stayed the same as last year’s AED 5,775 fee. However, this summer, golfers can play both Fire and Earth courses, an attractive offer considering the latter is home to the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
Next to the airport, a summer pass at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club costs AED 4,850 per person for four months, offering additional access to both Fire and Faldo courses on weekdays from 9am-2pm.
Away from action on the course, a summer membership at each club includes a host of food and beverage discounts, complimentary 30-minute lesson with a golf instructor, and access to the gym and swimming pool facilities. But with the ongoing pandemic, it is doubtful leisure access will be granted until government clearances are announced.
Trump International, Dubai Hills, JA The Resort, The Track and Arabian Ranches are all in the process of announcing summer deals, ranging from AED 3,000-6,000 per person. And if one wants to venture away from Dubai, then Al Hamra, Al Zorah, Yas Links, Al Ain and Sharjah also offer formidable deals and well-maintained courses.
Some clubs, like Els Club, are waiting for further clarity on the current restrictions in place before announcing deals due to reduced tee times and limited availability.
You don’t have to be a member to enjoy golf though. If you are interested in playing a round, then Troon and Golf Central are websites that show green fee rates and available tee times for various courses around the UAE. This allows people to play as much as they want without having to fork out a membership fee.
As the slow summer months approach, it’s all about finding something that makes you happy. Doing home workouts or running around the Marina may be a release for some people, while others enjoy playing sport outside with friends in a calm atmosphere.
That is what hooks people towards golf. Being outside with a group of two or three people, far away from the stresses of life. It does not take much of a toll on your body in comparison to football and rugby. As a result, you can play most days if time allows.
The rarity of success is what makes the game so captivating. Some days can be bad and those gremlins will crawl into your mind about not wanting to play again. This is where you have to control that impatience and stay focused. Other times then, you can feel on top of the world when you save for par or hole a stunning birdie.
The golf market in the UAE is showing clear signs of strength during difficult times. However, innovation, flexibility, an attractive social side and playing sport outdoors, are essential to attracting hearts and minds for the slow summer months.
