Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on his 400th Real Madrid appearance as the Champions League holders defeated Borussia Dortmund 3-1.
Gareth Bale struck an exquisite volley as the record 12-time European champions secured an 18th-minute lead at Signal Iduna Park, with the Welshman supplying Ronaldo for Real’s second just after half-time.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang poked in Gonzalo Castro’s cross to give Dortmund hope, but Ronaldo rifled past Roman Burki to cement a second straight win for Real in Group H and leave the Germans still without a point.
Here is our player ratings from an entertaining clash in Dortmund.
Burki 7 – Made some excellent saves, was good with the ball at his feet and could do nothing about the goals he conceded.
Piszczek 7 – One of the most constructive Dortmund players, getting more touches than any other home player.
Toprak 5 – Selected ahead of Marc Bartra but didn’t justify that selection. Replaced after an hour.
Papastathopoulos 5 – Confident on the ball but struggled badly without it, completely losing Bale for the opening goal.
Toljan 5 – Had a tough night against Carvajal, offered little in attack and was rightly substituted.
Gotze 7 – Some silky touches including a pair of great passes to create openings for Aubameyang.
Sahin 5 – One-paced and predictable in possession. A weak link going forward, but did a better job defensively.
Castro 6 – Worked hard to lead his team’s pressing, and delivered an excellent assist for the goal.
Yarmalenko 5 – Showed his undoubted class with some smooth moves, but lacked impact in the final third.
Aubameyang 4 – Scored a well-taken goal but otherwise extremely disappointing, dismally failing to live up to his reputation
Philipp 5 – Reality check for the youngster, who looked well off the pace tonight.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang attempts to tackle Keylor Navas
Weigl 6 – Appeared after an hour for Sahin and looks a much better bet in the deep-lying midfield position.
Dahoud 5 – Saw a lot of the ball after coming on, but didn’t do much with it.
Pulisic 5 – Didn’t have much time to impress but failed to make an impression.
Navas 6 – Didn’t have much to do apart from the goal, but did what he had to without fuss.
Carvajal 8 – Excellent both in attack and defence, teeing up Bale’s goal. Wasted one great break by shooting when he should have passed.
Varane 7 – Smooth and sleek, containing Aubameyang well and producing one superb challenge to prevent a certain goal.
Ramos 8 – Despite his histrionics and his regular unintended comedy, the Madrid skipper is a superb defender and showed it here.
Nacho 7 – Barely got forward but did a sterling job in defence. Mr Reliable strikes again.
Modric 7 – Class personified in midfield, effortlessly retaining possession. Created the third goal for Ronaldo.
Casemiro 6 – Strong, solid and unspectacular. Protected his defence as well as always.
Isco 6 – Not his best game, often careless in possession, but still always posed a threat to the hosts defence.
Kroos 6 – Looked physically a little below par after recent injury but able to help his team control the centre of the pitch.
Bale 8 – A magnificent goal, a crisp assist and an all-round bright display. Bale is back to his best – at last.
Ronaldo 8 – Did anyone ever doubt him? Now on four goals from two games in the Champions League, and many more will follow.

Asensio 6 – Looked a little over-eager to impress, wasting one chance with a heavy touch.
Vazquez and Ceballos – Too little time to make an impact.
